Fourth of July: Three WanderMust Spots

It’s nearly July 4th on Cape Cod!  Whether you’re here for a day or a stay, there’s no better way to celebrate any summertime holiday than hanging out with friends and family and making memories by the sea!

    Weekend Wanderings

    1. Play in the Gateway to the Cape: Wareham

Wareham is not technically on Cape Cod, but this historically rich seaside town deserves a bit more buzz.  Travelers have flocked to Wareham to enjoy over forty-five-miles of waterfront since the nineteenth century.https://www.mermaidsoncapecod.com/products/get-nauti-racerback-tankSwift’s beach is a perfect spot for the whole family.  There’s not only a public boat ramp, but at low tide, there’s a sandbar to explore by kayak or stand-up-paddleboard. It’s a super safe beach to take the kids; no need to worry about an undertow because the water’s calm and perfect for wading.   If you’re on the beach more than an hour, you’ll even catch Perry’s Ice Cream Truck. There’s a day pass available for non-residents and an annual sticker pass for residents available at Town Hall. https://www.mermaidsoncapecod.com/products/american-flag-tee-or-tank-starfish-stars-and-mermaid-stripesWareham is also the ideal spot to stop and get away from the traffic jams.  Take a trip to Buzzard’s Bay and bike, walk, or rollerblade along the Cape Cod Canal.  If you start out at the Railroad Bridge, you’ll see a brand-new playground with a Splash Pad for the kiddos to cool off before you set out to escape to the Cape. Be sure you travel along the scenic highway route!https://www.mermaidsoncapecod.com/products/racerback-tank-mermaids-on-cape-cod

    2. Hang out in Hyannis

https://www.mermaidsoncapecod.com/products/romper-in-modal-cupro Wanna know how to kick it on Cape Cod like the Kennedy clan? Take the 1-hour Hy-line Cruise tour past the Kennedy complex and then visit family-friendly Veterans Beach, home of historical shrines honoring John F. Kennedy and the Korean War Memorial. If you wander over to West Barnstable, Sandy Neck Beach boasts six miles of picture perfect shoreline. And if you’re up for a real off-the-beaten-path adventure, there’s even off-road beach trail access.

Don’t miss out on an afternoon of shopping local and sipping beer from 3-6 pm on Friday during Farmer’s Market Meets Happy Hour at Cape Cod Beer

     3. Wander to Wellfleet

Welcome to Cape Cod National Seashore!

The small seaside town of Wellfleet is divided into two sections: oceanside and a harborside.  I’m inviting you to wander with me on the oceanside where the earth crumbles to the sea; Wellfleet Beachcomber, Cahoon Hollow Beach. If you plan your trip and arrive early enough, you can snag a parking spot in the front lot where you’ll pull right up to the top of a sand dune showcasing spectacular ocean views.

    Sea? Nothing but breathtaking horizon!

    Need a budget-friendly beach day?

Pack up your cooler and beach bag essentials (just prepare for a journey down the super steep, sliding sand dune--the only way down to the beach!) and park your fins in the sand for an unforgettable day on the Cape Cod National Seashore. You won’t get any shell phone service so prepare to unplug and be one with nature.

You’ll still want to bring your phone or camera because I can almost guarantee you’ll spot several seals playing in the waves. Snap the shot and frame it for your very own FREE souvenir.

Be sure to pack your sweatshirt or a light jacket since it gets chilly once the sun sets beyond the sand dunes.  Our Fuzzy Fleece Stripe Official Mermaid Gear Hoodie and matching Anchor Tote Sea Bag are perfect patriotic gear to represent your inner Mermaid this July 4th.

Looking for a killer Beach Bar Atmosphere?

Follow Our Fins to Wellfleet BeachComber Restaurant & Oyster Bar!

Dress to impress in your best boutique fashion or keep it casual in cutoffs and Get Nauti tank or tee. You’ll feel #beachbeautiful simply standing at the bar ordering drinks while you’re looking out at the breathtaking ocean views.

After a long day riding waves, I usually reward myself with a Grilled Chicken Sandwich, French Fries, Pickle, and a Frozen Miami Vice cocktail to wash it all down.

As a single mom who craves a night out every now and then…I’ve had some of the most memorable moments watching the sunset, listening to live music, and mingling at "The Comah" after dark.

    Bonus: Catch Cape Cod Fireworks

Anywhere you travel on Cape Cod you’re sure to find Fabulous Firework Displays to Celebrate Independence Day!

    SUP Sandbar Adventure

    SUP Sandbar Adventure

Is the ocean your playground? Do you feel at peace whenever you’re near, on, or in the water?  If you find yourself feeling like your entire mood changes with the tide, then you’re most likely a wandering mermaid at heart.

Whether you enjoy floating around, kayaking, or catching killer waves, you’ll want to give stand-up-paddle boarding a try.

     What’s SUP? Just the Basics.

Let me start with a personal disclaimer:

I could spend an entire month writing Stand Up Paddle Boarding how-to guides and still have so much left to cover.  I'll just explain it in a very basic seashell for every mermaid to understand:

A Stand Up Paddle Board, or SUP, is essentially a surfboard that you stand on and use a paddle to get around with.  Yes, I realize I may have just stepped on some fins by saying that, but for the sake of those who have never even heard of SUP before, I’m gonna go ahead and take my chances.

It’s not all that hard once you get your balance and learn how to hold your paddle; I truly feel like most land people that give it a try end up getting the hang of it pretty quick.

How about if I told you that once you get rid of your sea legs you’ll mostly likely be able to paddle all around like a pro? If you think I’m nuts because you feel like you can barely ride a bike, then I’d suggest you go ahead and take lessons. If you’re already renting a board, there’s most likely someone around to show you sup (see what I just did there?).  No worries-a quick Google search will prove there’s an entire community of experienced SUP peeps chillin’ on Cape Cod waiting for your call.

My one suggestion?  Don’t take yourself too seriously.  It’s okay if you feel silly trying to get on board, you don’t have to look like a pro.  Just have fun and be grateful if you can stay afloat because like anything else, the more you practice, the better you’ll get.

Once you start paddling further out to sea, you’ll be ready to grab your lifejacket and leash, throw on your backpack, and strap your cooler to your board for an awesome adventure on the water!

Follow Our Fins to a sandbar that’s only fully accessible during low tide!

     SUP Sandbar Adventure

I pack up all my essential gear: paddle, leash, lifejacket, cooler with some Cape Cod Beer, all-natural sunscreen, at least one Get Nauti tank top, my Official Mermaid Gear towel, West Marine waterproof bag for my phone, and a few other safety and survival items that I’ll share with you in another blog coming soon.  I embark on my journey from Swift’s Neck Beach located in the "Gateway to Cape Cod": Wareham, MA.

I like to set out right after the tide turns so I can explore the shore when the sandbar is fully exposed.  I love when I time it just right during a full moon high tide and I catch the sunset as I glide along the surface of the sea.  It’s about a one-mile paddleboard workout, just in case you need a reason to skip out on the gym.

As soon as I wash ashore and secure my board, I always dive right in for a swim and get my tail wet.  As you can see, it’s a beach comber’s paradise.

I almost always leave with a beautiful piece of sea glass and several hand selected shells to add to my garden decor collection.

Sometimes, I even camp solo overnight!

I know what you're thinking, is it safe to be camping alone?! Well, I'm here to tell you that a well prepared mermaid can take on any adventure!

You may have heard that SUP can be somewhat of a solo sport and sometimes I even prefer it that way, but it surely doesn’t have to be.  I’ve brought a kayaking friend along before and it was a whole lot of fun when the tide rolled right up near my tent at night!

There’s also nothin’ quite like being waterlocked out on a sandbar with a good friend sharing travel tales by a camp fire.

Wander along with us for this sandbar adventure.  Let's take a virtual journey through my photos!

Discover the ruins of old beachside cottages...

Driftwood as tall as me and trees decorated with conch shells by fellow sandbar explorers...

I’ll even share a spectacular sandbar sunset that will brighten up your screen...

Oh, and if you wanna crush it on Instagram…do yourself a favor and set sail to the sandbar to snap some of your own stunning shots.

    Fins Up For Fitness!

    Fins Up For Fitness!

So long whacky winter weather.  Hello sunshine, sandy feet, salty hair, and swimsuit season!

Yes, I know…some of us dread shedding our threads and showing some skin.  But- why not embrace warmer weather by making it your most active time of the year?

Sure, easier said than done, right?  Not so much! All you need is the right setting, and I have the perfect location in mind:  The Cape Cod Canal!

Mermaids are marvelous no matter what shape or size, and no two tails are ever alike!  Why not empower one another to love the fins we’re in?

Love My Official Mermaid Gear? Follow Our Link Below!

It’s no secret that a daily dose of exercise invigorates our mind, body, and soul.  So, I thought I’d share some of my favorite Official Mermaids on Cape Cod Fitness Gear and challenge you to some fitness fun in the Summer sun.

     In a seashell:

Whether you’re here for a day or a stay-you won’t want to miss out on a trip to the Cape Cod Canal!   The canal is about a 7-mile-long, man-made water-way that traverses the narrow neck of land joining Cape Cod to the mainland.

(Check out the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce to learn more about the canal history.  Be sure to take advantage of their Interactive Visitor's Center that's educational and fun for ALL ages!)

It’s truly a sight to sea!

Like so many more native mermaids, I was lucky enough to spend my summers on Cape Cod.  As a little mermaid, I mostly rode my bike and (tried) to rollerblade.  Now that I’ve got more tales to tell (aka I’m older), I often visit the canal for some fitness fun.

(Love My Tank Top? GET YOURS HERE)

I usually start my journey at the scenic Buzzards's Bay Railroad Bridge

I enjoy walking and/or running along the canal, and I’ve seen some of the most spectacular sunrise and sunsets along the way. I’ve even spotted a seal or two swimming through!

Remember, mermaids need to drink lots of water to keep their scales and hair shiny.  Be sure you pack your Mermaids On Cape Cod Aluminum Water Bottle so you can stay hydrated AND help save marine life by tossing those single use plastic bottles!

My goal is to motivate and inspire you to grab your Official Mermaid Gear and head down to the Cape Cod Canal for a salty, seaside sweat session!
