It was a sunny Sunday afternoon in June as I set out on a Cape Cod travel adventure. I worked up quite an appetite exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations in Brewster, so when I saw the road side sign for The Island Blue Crab I randomly stopped and discovered a hidden gem that I knew I needed to share with my fellow wanderers.
The Island Blue Crab
I’m a sucker for a good seafood deal and a single mom on a budget, so I’ll admit the $1 Oyster Special (until 5:30pm daily) advertised on the side of Rt. 6A reeled me right in.
Inside Island Vibes
When I first wandered through the doors I felt right at home by the sea. The open seating plan, vibrant colors, and nautical décor give it that laid-back island feel. Check out these happy customers enjoying an evening of delightful food and spirits…right under a couple of Blue Crabs chillin’ on the wall.
Ocean blue lights beaming from the bar made me feel like I was on a tiny island oasis. There’s also a patio area to enjoy if you prefer to dine outdoors under an umbrella.

Whether you’re grabbin' a beer with your buddies, looking for a romantic date night, or you’ve got the kiddos in tow, the Island Blue Crab has a seat for you. Just be sure you say hello to the Island Blue Crab's lovely hostess, Petra. Her smile will welcome you aboard for shore!
I happily chose a seat at the bar rather than a more private booth off to the side, because you know...I was solo...and thirsty. I asked Luis to serve me a menu favorite with the locals and less than fifteen minutes later, I was sipping on Pinot Noir and feasting on this mouth-watering Fried Oyster Scampi appetizer.
Since I still had a full day of adventures planned (and I left without packing my usual sunset snacks) I decided to stick with ordering my favorite menu selection wherever I wander: Grilled Chicken Sandwich.
As you can see, the presentation was picture perfect and I couldn’t wait to take a bite of tender, juicy grilled chicken breasts on a super soft sandwich roll, covered in Swiss cheese, drizzled with honey mustard, and layered with red onions and fresh, sliced avocado. (insert drooling emoji here)
Award Winning Owner & Chef
I just had to know who to thank for such a tasty lunch and luckily for me, I got to meet co-owner Walter Montero, an award-winning Cape Cod Chef! He shared with me his journey to becoming one of Cape Cod’s Top Chefs from 2015-2016 as well as four-year Cape Cod Chowder Festival Winner from 2012-2015!
Former owner of the Black Cat Tavern, “Wally” has over 20 years of cooking experience; he's worked in high-end New York City restaurants and even the Road House Café right here at home on Cape Cod. He is skilled at preparing and cooking a wide variety of cuisine; French, Italian, American and even Mexican!
Wally believes the secret to a delicious dish is partly in the ingredients, which is why he orders prime steaks from Boston; he buys his produce from local farmers; and of course, he prepares only the freshest caught seafood on Cape Cod! In the words of Wally himself, “The Island Blue Crab menu is my own creation.” And as a native mermaid who loves to grub…I was more than satisfied with my meal.

Wally invited me to come back and dine during Live Entertainment on a Friday or Saturday evening so that I could check out the nightlife. I also got the opportunity to experience some behind the scenes kitchen action and really dive into his homemade soups, sauces, salad dressings, and gourmet entrees so that I could share my experience with you!
Island Blue Crab Spirits
As you can imagine--when one of Cape Cod’s top chefs invited me back to his restaurant for a casual, elegant, Friday night dining experience--I was super excited! I dressed up in my best Mermaids on Cape Cod boutique outfit; a sexy pair of embroidered crop Driftwood jeans and a fabulous floral peek front and back blouse with incredibly hot sleeves.
FriYay night had me feeling beach beautiful from head to fin. I was dressed to impress, wandering through the high-top tables at the bar area and meeting new people from near and far, taking photographs of the fabulous food presentations coming from the kitchen and movin' to the sweet sound of live music serenading the dining area. It was literally Just Beachy!
